I'm sorry to hear of Les's passing.

We sat next to each other in Matt Coyle's class on novels. As a clueless white teenager, I once asked Les if he could recommend a jazz musician I should check out. That's the kind of thing a black kid would know about, right?  Well, I'm not sure how much more Les knew than I did, but setting aside how obtuse my question was, he mentioned John Coltrane. I bought "Kulu Se Mama," a great record. I think of Les every time I play it. I regret not being able to share that with him, and maybe get more recommendations.

Les and I were very close friends. After our 40th reunion Les, Jim Sullivan, Catsy Thayer and I used to go out for lunch frequently when I was working part time. Les was always very passionate about people and current events.  He had a huge heart and would do anything for anyone. And he was a talker! When he called, you could count on a LONG  phone conversation!  Miss you Les!

What a shock it was when Les passed away. I got to know him better after the 40th Reunion. We must have talked for 3 hours straight at the mini-reunion in Estes Park in Colorado. Les was unique, in a very positive way. he would sometimes call my cell phone out of the blue, just to hear my opinion. What a beautiful friend and man he was.
